Sign 27
In her sculptural work, Thea Moeller uses industrial materials and a formal language taken from urban landscapes and their neglected corners. She draws on assemblage strategies and assembles partly prefabricated, partly reused items for her sculptures and installations. The resulting objects appear unfinished, as enigmatic as they are familiar from unintentional, urban ‘everyday assemblages‘. The work “Sign”, which Moeller developed for Blickachsen 14, also follows this approach. It is reminiscent of advertising signs for motels and restaurants along American highways and looks like a relic, but is in fact carefully crafted by the artist. Without a product or offer to advertise, and standing in the middle of the Kurpark, “Sign” draws attention to our interaction with the built environment, which in everyday life remains self-evident, incidental and beneath the surface.
Thea Moeller studied at the art academies in Nuremberg and Vienna. To date, she has presented her works in solo exhibitions in Austria, Germany, the USA and Denmark. Moeller, who also occasionally teaches and works as a curator, has taken part in group exhibitions throughout Europe as well as in the USA and Georgia.
