Equation (f) 20
For sculptor Franka Hörnschemeyer, space in relation to the body is the central theme. She frequently uses industrially prefabricated materials from the construction industry, such as formwork elements, plasterboard or aluminium composite panels. This results in architecture-related constructions that acoustically and visually reveal the structure of spaces and often enter into a dialogue with the social and historical dimensions of their respective locations. For Blickachsen 14, she created “Equation (f)”, a sculpture that unfolds its own dynamic of perspectives and balance of forms in the Kurpark. On an open structure made of formwork grids, which serve as a frame in concrete construction, lies an almost equally large cube made of formwork panels standing on its corner. By circling the sculpture, corporeality can be experienced here as an interplay between transparency and weight, the presence and absence of material, movement and visual references in space. At the same time, however, the social component of an inner-city location also appears here, which as a spa park conveys tranquillity and stability, but is in fact constantly confronted with urban change, transience and the activities of the city's population.
Franka Hörnschemeyer studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg before moving to New York for a year. Her work has been shown internationally in many exhibitions. She has received numerous commissions for art in the public space, including "BFD - bündig fluchtend dicht" (1998/2001) for the Paul Löbe House at the German Bundestag in Berlin. Hörnschemeyer taught as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy until 2024.
