Suite 3

Michael Dekker’s sculptures are, in a very classical sense, ‘built’ and are developed in a complex upward movement from found, cut, bent materials. Superpositions, dislocations, curvatures – as seen in nature and in the earth’s geology – repeatedly emerge in reconstituted forms in the artist’s works. Thus a field of tension is created in the scultptures, between apparently natural, grown forms on the one hand, and constructional building and architectonic thinking, on the other. For Blickachsen 13, Dekker created just such a collection of material, collaged and subsequently cast in aluminium, occupying its space with an almost musical rhythm and movement: a focal point in the park, continually changing its form between massiveness and emptiness as one circles around it. As the title for this work, Dekker chose a term taken from both baroque music and architecture: “Suite”.
Michael Dekker, originally an agronomist, completed – in parallel to his studies in sculpture in Düsseldorf – a degree in geography in Duisburg, before gaining his master class diploma at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2013. Since then, his work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
