Parkdose

Parkdose 28

In his sculptural practice, Manfred Pernice uses simple everyday materials from building and construction, such as chipboard, blockboard, tiles, iron bars and concrete. By supplementing his sculptures with objects, texts and drawings, he lends them site-specific references. From the very beginning, containers, often in the shape of tin cans, have played a special role in Pernice’s work. This is the case, also, for “Parkdose”, presented at Blickachsen 14. Ist purpose seems to be to bridge the gap between post-war kiosk and art object – the grey concrete is reminiscent of bunkers or brutalist architecture. A handout written by the artist deliberately misdescribes the work as an authentic, listed building from the 1940s. In the Kurpark, the “Parkdose” stands in a dialogue with the austere architecture of the nearby clinic and in striking contrast to the green surroundings and Lenné‘s garden art.
Manfred Pernice studied at the art academies in Braunschweig and Berlin. He has exhibited his work internationally in numerous major institutions and renowned exhibition formats, including the Venice Biennale and documenta. Pernice taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 2004-2009 and has been professor at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2012.
