Door 12
In her ceramic sculptures and bronzes, but also in paintings, drawings and collages, Simone Fattal reflects on the history of the Middle East. Her works incorporate mythology and archaeology as well as her own experiences of political instability, war and flight. The rough, jagged surfaces of her sculptures seem to reveal vulnerability and deprivation. This is also the case in the work “Door”, which is presented in Blickachsen 14: The two segments of the patinated bronze casting, which looks like a raw, untreated clay sculpture, are reminiscent of crumbling walls. They appear to be held together only by long nails, which seem to have been driven through them with brute force. The surface also evokes associations with something organic, such as human skin. Thus the aesthetic features of the sculpture are condensed into a touching and subtly disturbing overall impression.
Simone Fattal studied philosophy and archaeology in Beirut and Paris and then began working as an artist and poet, later also as a publisher in the USA. As one of the most important women sculptors of her generation, her work has been exhibited worldwide and she has also taken part in numerous prestigious group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 2022 and 2024.
