Claudia Comte

(Switzerland) *1983 in Lausanne

Numerous exhibitions in Europe and the US are testament to the success of the young Swiss artist Claudia Comte, as are the many prizes she has received in recognition of her work. Her work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and at Art Basel in 2017, the whole Messeplatz in front of the exhibition halls became the stage for one of her interactive installations. In her Berlin studio, Comte mainly creates wood sculptures, but she also designs marble objects in the most varied sizes, or giant graphic wall-paintings and environments. Her works in wood, cut with a chainsaw then painstakingly sanded and polished, as well as her marble sculptures seem organic with their perfect curves and smooth surfaces. With playful titles and cartoonish forms, they open a space between seriousness and fun. A characteristic example of this is the marble sculpture “Pietro (Italian Bunny 6)”, on display in the Bad Homburg Kurpark in Blickachsen 12. Are we dealing with rabbit’s ears here? This work is part of a group of works with titles such as Leonardo, Michelangelo or Donatello – in which Comte makes tongue-in-cheek reference to the great masters of the Italian Renaissance (here probably Pietro Perugino).
