Karl Hartung

Hartung is one of the central figures in German sculpture of the mid-20th century. He was one of few artists who, counter to the Nazi doctrine of art, concerned himself with abstraction, and whose artistic development parallelled the European avantgarde. Characteristic of Hartung’s work are the organic abstractions that nevertheless remain figurative and sensual. His artistic aim was the visualization of the creative principle. Here, concreteness and abstraction were not exclusive, but mutually fertile counterparts. However, his understanding of concreteness was not a naturalistic likeness, but an organic condensation.
