Blickachsen 12

Contemporary Sculpture in Bad Homburg and Frankfurt Rhine-Main

In collaboration with Wanås Konst sculpture park, Knislinge, Sweden

We are very much looking forward to the twelfth edition of the Blickachsen International Sculpture Biennale, which will be opened on 26 May 2019, at 11:30 am on the Schmuckplatz in the Bad Homburg Kurpark.

At the beginning of the series, there was a single exhibition in the Bad Homburg Kurpark, with its concept of physically – and figuratively – taking up the landscaped visual axes (Blickachsen) of the park’s garden architecture. This basic idea has successfully proved itself over the last more than twenty years, and I am delighted that Blickachsen, which has in the meantime expanded into much of the Rhine-Main region, now ranks as one of the pre-eminent sculptural events in Germany.

Every two years, the exhibitions focus attention on the interplay between contemporary art and the historical surroundings. Each time, the aim is to show works by both talented young artists as well as by renowned sculptors. And the collaboration, each time, with a different partner museum guarantees ever new impulses.

In an interplay of art, nature and the public space, the artworks are on show in Bad Homburg's historical Kurpark and landgraviate castle gardens, and at further venues in the Rhine-Main region. This expansion of Blickachsen beyond the boundaries of Bad Homburg offers visitors to the Sculpture Biennale the opportunity to discover not only the broad spectrum of contemporary works on display, but also the Rhine-Main region with its fantastic landscapes and cultural landmarks, ranging from beautiful old towns and ancient castles to a variety of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Blickachsen 11, some 80 large-scale sculptures and installations were shown in altogether eight locations in the region.

That we are able, every second summer, to experience art in the parks and cultural landscapes of our region is in no small measure thanks to the very generous contributions from the supporters of the project. Without them, there would be no Blickachsen – and to them all I would like to express my deepest thanks. I would also like to thank all our partners, and the many regular helpers, for their valuable contribution to the success of the exhibitions.

On behalf of the organizers, I would – already now – like to invite you to the Blickachsen 12 exhibition, and to commend our varied educational programmes, as well as the fifth Children’s Blickachsen by the Children’s Art School of Bad Homburg.
